Section titled “What It Is”Fresh basil is one of the most aromatic herbs in the summer CSA box at Cold Springs Organics. Bright green leaves with a sweet, slightly peppery fragrance, it’s at its best from midsummer through early fall when the weather is warm.

Section titled “How to Store It”- Keep stems in a glass of water on the counter (not the fridge — cold turns it black).
- Cover loosely with a plastic bag.
- Use within 5–7 days.
How to Prep It
Section titled “How to Prep It”Pinch leaves from stems just before using. Tear rather than chop to minimize bruising and browning.
How to Cook It
Section titled “How to Cook It”- Caprese — layer with ripe tomato and fresh mozzarella, drizzle with olive oil.
- Pasta sauce — blend into a fresh tomato sauce just before serving.
- Compound butter — mix chopped basil into softened butter for a finishing touch on grilled vegetables or bread.
Quick Meal Idea
Section titled “Quick Meal Idea”Tomato basil bruschetta — dice ripe tomato with torn basil, olive oil, and a pinch of salt; spoon over toasted bread.
